Land Activities

Planning your tropical escape is almost as much fun as the holiday itself! Here are our tips and recommendations to make your holiday just perfect. We haven’t suggested itineraries, but have included a wide range of local businesses that cover all interests, hobbies, budgets and age groups. Why not pick an area, such as Mele, Pango, or the east or north coasts and plan some great day trips? Also check out the rainy day activities such as quad-biking, massage, museums or art galleries, french coffee shops, as sometimes Vanuatu can be wet. Most of all, have fun!

If you can’t see something you need, drop us a line and we will follow it up for you. You may also like to check out which days are Port Vila Cruise Ship Days, or Santo Cruise Ship Days, as popular sites can get very busy on these days.

For a comprehensive look at half and full day tours available for Efate, please check out Evergreen Vanuatu’s website. They are an indigenous tour operator that offer a range of tours to suit your time and budget.

Pascal at Ecotours is one of the most informative guides in Port Vila and comes highly recommended. For detailed information on his range of tours, please visit the Ecotours website. Pascal also offers bicycle and walking tours around Port Vila for the more adventurous.

Two prominent tour companies that offer a range of round-island tours are Adventures in Paradise and Atmosphere Tours. Two smaller companies that offer personal and relaxed tour options are The Real Vila Tour and Ride-On Tours Vanuatu. Please contact these companies direct for their current pricing. We have more information on other local operators in the list below. New kids on the block Dream Tours also have a good range of tours (and kids under 8 ride free!) and also have carhire options close by to their office. Locally owned and operated Bountiful Tours and Transfers also have a very good list of tours (including a boozy tour!) that run around Efate.

For tour operators in Santo, please talk with your accommodation provider, or check out Wrecks to Rainforest's websitefor a comprehensive list of tour and sightseeing options for the North.

Most resorts and larger hotel complexes around Vanuatu offer Cultural Nights. We enjoyed the cultural night on Erakor Island Resort (bookings recommended) and the short boat trip out to the island adds to the adventure, especially for the kids. It was the first activity we ever did when arriving in Port Vila with three small children in tow. The shows are all similar at all resorts, offering you traditional food, music, kava tasting and dancing. Not to be missed!

Back to Eden Bar & Restaurant (also water activities)

I was lucky enough to visit Back to Eden and enjoy one of Bronnie's fabulous fruit smoothies recently, and knew I had discovered a hidden gem! Located on the spectacular and often unheard of Mangalilu Reef just a few minutes south of Havannah, Back to Eden is situated perfectly if you want a  tranquil and idyllic location for lunch, afternoon tea and a swim.

Drive down the dirt track at the turn off to Mangalilu just south of Havannah, and 5 minutes later you are in paradise! The only sounds are the gently cascading water from the nearby fresh water spring and the birds. You may also hear the gentle lapping of water on the nearby reef. Serving up delicious food in fabulous surroundings is just the beginning. They also offer snorkeling tours in crystal clear waters, can arrange local activities with the Mangalilu villagers, even take you for a ride in a traditional outrigger canoe.

Book the cafe for your private function and enjoy dining in a relaxed atmosphere, watching the sun set over Havannah Harbour.

Open Friday - Monday from 10am - 5pm

Camping

There are just a few camp grounds around Vanuatu. The details are below. There really isn't such a thing as "Crown Land" in Vanuatu. All land belongs to someone, so to pitch a tent just anywhere isn't a good idea. Having said that, if you wanted to stop a night or two near a local village, asking permission of the local chief would probably get you a favourable hearing, and paying a few hundred vatu a night (just a few dollars) could seal the deal. Like everyone, local people like to be treated with respect. In traditional villages, skimpy clothing isn't the done thing, so if you are off the beaten track, please cover up. You time with local people, especially those living a custom lifestyle, will be very rewarding and you will learn alot!

Campgrounds are:

Yasur View Lodge, Treehouse and Campground (Located on Tanna) Stay here for up close and personal Mt Yasur(volcano) experiences www.yasurview.com

Gideon's Landing / Havannah Eco Lodge (Located on Efate) Drive about 40 minutes from Vila, heading west around the island. Signs on the side of the road. Spectacular bay with calm waters for swimming and snorkelling. Great spot with lots to do close by.

Bukura Beach (Located on Efate) Drive about 15 minutes from Vila, heading west, after Mele take the road to Devil's Point (it has lots of signs at the beginning of the road) and about 5-8 minutes down the road you will see a large green sign on your left listing several phone numbers listed for you to call. Beautiful beach front land with coral reef frontage. Close to other attractions too.

Divi's Bar and Tapas

Divi's is at Mangaliliu, about 5 minutes south of Havannah in the north west of Efate. It's the perfect spot to finish of a round-island drive, or head there for the afternoon and enjoy the sunset with a drink or three. Divi's is a low-key tapas bar and restaurant, presenting beautiful food cooked simply and to perfection. Taking inspiration from their local garden, the menu changes with the seasons. The service is great all year round though, and it's fantastic to see new businesses flourishing in the North West corner of Efate. There is lots to see and do around Divi's, so make it a must-stop. Guests over 15 years only. Phone for current opening hours.

Le Life Resort (Le Mer Restaurant)

We love to stop at Le Life whenever we go around the island with friends or family that are on a cruise ship, and need to see as much as possible in just a few hours. Located at Ebule, in the North East corner of Efate, Le Life is a beautiful beachfront restaurant and small resort with stunning views. The local staff are friendly and accommodating and their calamari rings and other fresh seafood are delicious and well priced! You can also combine a trip to Eton Reef or any of the swimming and snorkelliing spots up north with a trip to Le Life for drinks or lunch, it is situated close enough to North Efate to be a perfect hub for a day out. We love it!

Manples Tours

The best way to discover Efate is by doing a round island tour with a local. Manples means "local" in Vanuatu, and so Manples Tours is a genuine, locally owned and operated business. There are several parlours near the Grand Casino on the southern side of town. There is also a locally run massage and beauty spa called Paradise Spa on the northern side of town, opposite the Bred Bank. Alternatively, some stores offer local massage at very reasonable prices. A highly recommended Thai massage parlour can be found in the Tana Cine complex on the ground floor near the French bakery.

Mud Baths & Thermal Hot Springs - North Efate

Re-opening after TC Pam really knocked this part of Efate for 6, the Mud Baths at North Efate offer you a fun and very down to earth (pardon the pun) experience. Just north of Ebule, or east of Emau, the mudbaths are located at Takara and are easy to find on a day trip around the island. There are several different pools to splash about in, and it is FUN! You can then clean off in the thermal springs or the nearby ocean. Go with friends and take plenty of photos!

Pepeyo Cultural & Educational Tour

The Pepeyo Cultural and Educational Tour takes your family back in time to the island of Futuna, one of Vanuatu's most southern and remote island cultures. A unique tour that demonstrates an ancient way of life, Pepeyo will entertain and educate your family. See demonstrations of fire walking, food preparation, custom dance and song. Located in the Teouma area, around 15 minutes east of Port Vila, this tour is a great way to see the real Vanuatu. Rarru Rentapao Waterfall

The waterfall at Rarru Rentapao has been open to the public since June 2016 and I am very glad they are now sharing this natural delight. Rentapao is around 15 minutes east of Port Vila, on the way to Eton and the Blue Lagoon. The Rentapao River flows freely even in the dry season, making these falls a sure bet all year round when other waterfalls stop running altogether. Shady pools and cascading waterfalls invite you to jump in  -I dare you to resist! The main waterfall is around 150m from the carpark area. The stroll along the riverside is easy and beautiful. Jump (carefully) from the top, swing from the rope swing or gently float around with the kids. Floating rings and kayaks are also available. A must see for families of all ages and sizes. A small kiosk onsite sells snacks and drinks, and several covered picnic tables line the riverbank so you can stay the whole day if you wish. Adults 1000 vatu, children 5 - 15 years old 500 vatu, toddlers are free.

Resort Day Passes - Port Vila

There are many beautiful resorts around Port Vila, and they offer their guests a range of wonderful services like spa treatments, stunning pools and cocktail lists as long as your arm. Resorts can be a great place to visit for a day too - the kids will love the pool and you will love the pampering! While expensive to stay at, the resorts around Vila offer day passes that can be reasonably priced and generally the price you pay to enter is then deducted from your food bill. The restaurants are generally quite expensive, but the quality should be high.

Our favourites are Erakor Island and Aquanas for families, Breakas (pictured left) and Eratap Resorts for adults-only luxury and The Holiday Inn for that all-round resort feel. The newly refubished Iririki Island is also a lovely place to spend the day by the pool. Le Lagon and Breakas offer buffet style dining most nights, their Seafood Buffets are great value. We also love Wild Ginger at Le Lagon - fantastic Japanese-inspired dining. Please visit each resort's website for the most up to date information on their services and rules for day visitors.

Suzanne Bastien Foundation Gallery

The Suzanne Bastien Foundation Gallery is a bright and airy space that houses the intriguing 'Maps of Vanuatu' art exhibition. It also regularly exhibits local artist's work and has a small art school that runs classes from time to time. Suzanne Bastien founded the gallery in the 60's and some of the collection dates to this time, offering you an interesting peak into the lives of locals and expats living and working in Vanuatu before the days of Independence. Worth the short 3 minute drive from Port Vila to Pango, the 'art precinct' of Port Vila.

The Moso

Moso Island is just a few hundred metres off the north western corner of Efate. Moso Island is an untouched tropical paradise with reefs, white sand beaches and turquoise waters, and it now also boasts a modern yet very relaxed resort, The Moso. We visited as day guests. A 30 minute drive from Vila brings you to the wharf, simply ring Joel at The Moso and in 5 minutes your transfer boat will be waiting for you. We were lucky enough to visit The Moso on a quiet day, and we were the only guests. After a relaxing cocktail by the water and a swim, we enjoyed perfectly cooked local seafood and chilled Australian wine. We then went for a short kayak north of the resort, we even saw a large turtle swimming on the reef - perfect. There is also a pool at the resort, massages are available, and The Moso has a very impressive cocktail list (ours were delish!)

The ideal spot for a relaxing and retreating from everything, all you need is on hand. Joel and his team take care of everything for you - right down to the luxury beach towels that are happily provided. Highly recommended.

The Reef Vanuatu Zoological

This beautiful and environmentally friendly eco-haven is just 15 minutes east of Port Vila, at Narpow Point. You can get up close and as personal as you like with animals native to Vanuatu. Have you even held an Iguana before? Or touched a baby turtle? Trust me, you haven't seen cute until you've seen a baby turtle - they define the word! The Reef has marine animals such as sting rays, as well as birds of prey and a beautiful coral reef to carefully explore. They even have an animal nursery and their tours are informative and interesting. Open daily from 9 - 4. Combine a visit with a swim at the nearby Rentapao Waterfall, it's a perfect day out for young and old alike.

Vanuatu Jungle Mountain Bike Adventure

Vanuatu Jungle Mountain Bike Adventures is a new business to Port Vila. Offering mountainbike tours around the island, Bob and his team will take you to the bluest of blue holes, a turtle sanctuary and the gorgeous Rentapao waterfalls.
