Back to Eden Bar & Restaurant (also water activities)

I was lucky enough to visit Back to Eden and enjoy one of Bronnie's fabulous fruit smoothies recently, and knew I had discovered a hidden gem! Located on the spectacular and often unheard of Mangalilu Reef just a few minutes south of Havannah, Back to Eden is situated perfectly if you want a  tranquil and idyllic location for lunch, afternoon tea and a swim.

Drive down the dirt track at the turn off to Mangalilu just south of Havannah, and 5 minutes later you are in paradise! The only sounds are the gently cascading water from the nearby fresh water spring and the birds. You may also hear the gentle lapping of water on the nearby reef. Serving up delicious food in fabulous surroundings is just the beginning. They also offer snorkeling tours in crystal clear waters, can arrange local activities with the Mangalilu villagers, even take you for a ride in a traditional outrigger canoe.

Book the cafe for your private function and enjoy dining in a relaxed atmosphere, watching the sun set over Havannah Harbour.

Open Friday - Monday from 10am - 5pm

Blue Hole (Santo)

Is the Blue Hole on Santo or Efate? Both! And there are similar swimming spots on lots of other islands too. But the Santo Blue Hole is a stand out. Its magical deep blue waters and shady surrounds mean you have the perfect spot to spend an entire day relaxing. There is a bar and small playground area, shady seating spots and perfect picnic spots surrounding this natural wonder.

Champagne Beach (Santo)

Arguably the most photographed beach in the South Pacific, Champagne Beach is stunning. White sand, warm gentle turquoise waters. Tourists flock here to experience it for themselves, so pick a cruises ship free day, take a bottle of bubbly and your towel, and soak in the scenery.

You get to hold mature turtles here, and support the program with voluntary donations. After this, more sailing, more eating…then SERIOUSLY good snorkelling off the boat on the southwest side of the island. Bring your underwater camera and your sense of wonder! Eton Beach

Eton Beach, just north of the Blue Lagoon on Efate, is beautiful and calm most days and has a swimming spot for all levels. The nearby fresh water river is great for toddler paddling, the shallows for younger children, and the beach area for more experienced swimmers and snorkelers. There is a naturally formed deep hole near the reef which is fun to explore, and the reef has good snorkelling. There is a rip on the reef, so experienced swimmers only past the breakers! 300 vatu per person entry keeps the traditional owners happy and you are directly contributing to their community. The local village swim here too, it’s a great spot to meet the locals and chat!

A trip to Eton combines really well with a half day trip to Eden on the River, Rarru Rentapao River, The Blue Lagoon or Aquanas Beach Resort.

Fishing Charters and Tours

Around Port Vila, you can choose from Wild Blue fishing charters (Nautilus Watersports) and Ocean Blue fishing charters fishing charters in Port Vila. Both are highly recommended, run by experience skippers and deckhands, and offer quality equipment and transfers if required. Out of Havannah Harbour, check out Nambas Fishing Charters (Keep Fishing Vanuatu), operating day and multi-day tours.

Lelepa Island also has a more relaxed ‘island’ fishing experience where you will be taken in a local style banana boat to catch your meal for the day. Both experiences are memorable, but very different.

Send a request for a local fishing trip to the Lelepa Island Tours email address. This will depart from the Lelepa landing near Havannah Harbour.

For a smaller operation, suitable for families and people of all ages, please try Eleanore Cruises.

Every island you visit will have fishing trips available at some level, however Efate and Santo have an excellent range of small, local providers and also more professional outfits. Here are a few for Santo too.

Alot of these providers also offer SCUBA diving too. Please check out their websites for all the latest information.

Moso Island Day Tour - Turtle Bay

Moso Island is an untouched paradise off the North West tip of Efate, about 45 minutes from Port Vila. There are several tours and trips that will get you to Moso, but this one is totally different. Run by locals that have lived on the island their whole life, you really step outside the 'touristy' well-trodden path here. The tour arranges your transfers for you from your accommodation around 8.30 in the morning. When you return to Port Vila in the late afternoon, you will have experienced snorkelling on untouched reef, swimming, kayaking, and relaxing in the clear blue waters and enjoyed a freshly cooked BBQ lunch that will feature the freshest of local produce. Rarru Rentapao Waterfall

The waterfall at Rarru Rentapao has been open to the public since June 2016 and I am very glad they are now sharing this natural delight. Rentapao is around 15 minutes east of Port Vila, on the way to Eton and the Blue Lagoon. The Rentapao River flows freely even in the dry season, making these falls a sure bet all year round when other waterfalls stop running altogether. Shady pools and cascading waterfalls invite you to jump in  -I dare you to resist! The main waterfall is around 150m from the carpark area. The stroll along the riverside is easy and beautiful. You may have heard that there is no surf in Vanuatu….but what they mean is that there are no crowded breaks in Vanuatu. Surfing in Vanuatu is consistently good, but can be seasonal. The waves aren’t huge, but are perfectly shaped and due to the reef formations of many islands, sit just off shore. Pango just south of Port Vila has some great breaks, as does Devils Point Road and Teouma on the West and East coasts. Check out this website for break shots and ratings. This clip shows the lefts, rights, and everything in between.

There are also Billabong and Roxy stores in town that sell genuine products, and a Quiksilver outlet in the Handicraft Market on Wharf Road, Port Vila.

Being part of a volcanic chain of islands known collectively as the Ring of Fire, there are both black and white sand beaches to be enjoyed in Vanuatu. There are also stunning coral islands, with hardly any sand at all. Driving around Efate you will quite literally stumble across little bays just waiting for you to pull over and dive in. A lot of beach access points are on private land and you may be approached by a local caretaker requesting a small payment. So take along some change, usually 300 to 500 vatu per person is expected, sometimes 1000 vatu per carload will be enough.

The water is always warm, even in winter. With a multitude of marine life at your feet, snorkelling is amazing all around Vanuatu, but please watch your step. Reef shoes are recommended, especially for children. Coral cuts can be painful and there are some spiky little sea creatures that will hurt if stepped on. If you are swimming around coral areas, proceed with caution, and enjoy the beautiful waters to your hearts content!

Some popular swimming beaches around Port Vila are Pango Beach, Mele Beach, Blacksands Beach, and the lagoons near Le Lagon Resort and at Ifira Point are great for finding sea life at low tide. Erakor Island is also popular for day trips with snorkelling off the back of the island at high tide quite good. Pack a picnic and head east or west, it won’t be too long before you are rewarded!

The Beach Bar

The best beach bar in Vila, the Beach Bar in Mele is relaxed and welcoming and has great specials. Tuesday night is wood fired pizza night and a movie is shown on the large screen right on the beach. Friday night is Vanua Fire Dance, not to be missed, and Sunday is Circus night, fantastic for younger children. Great atmosphere, friendly local staff, relaxed right on the beach dining and entertainment. Bookings are recommended for Vanua Fire on Fridays. My kids highly recommend this one - Come for the day and swim and snorkel on the beach at the front of the bar, so relaxing and the whole family will be happy.

The Moso

Moso Island is just a few hundred metres off the north western corner of Efate. Moso Island is an untouched tropical paradise with reefs, white sand beaches and turquoise waters, and it now also boasts a modern yet very relaxed resort, The Moso. We visited as day guests. A 30 minute drive from Vila brings you to the wharf, simply ring Joel at The Moso and in 5 minutes your transfer boat will be waiting for you. We were lucky enough to visit The Moso on a quiet day, and we were the only guests. After a relaxing cocktail by the water and a swim, we enjoyed perfectly cooked local seafood and chilled Australian wine. We then went for a short kayak north of the resort, we even saw a large turtle swimming on the reef - perfect. There is also a pool at the resort, massages are available, and The Moso has a very impressive cocktail list (ours were delish!)

The ideal spot for a relaxing and retreating from everything, all you need is on hand. Joel and his team take care of everything for you - right down to the luxury beach towels that are happily provided. Highly recommended.
